Service Dog Training

AKA: A ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTIONS

You’ve picked the dog. You’ve started training. You’re doing all the research.

And even though it’s exciting, unbelievably rewarding and you know you can do it—you’ve also realized it’s a lot of HARD WORK.

Cue: overwhelm, self-doubt and confusion (with a slight sprinkle of anxiety.)

One minute, you're convinced you have it all figured out, and the next, you're doubting if you and your dog have what it takes to make this bond work.

Don’t worry—you’re not alone. We’ve been there.

With the flood of conflicting and confusing information out there, it’s hard to know what the ‘right’ thing to do is.

THE TRUTH IS:

The ‘right thing’ has nothing to do with how hard you try as an owner-trainer or how badly you want it to work…

Training success has everything to do with your understanding of the science of learning and behavior change.

Without that, it’s like trying to put together a 10,000-piece puzzle without knowing what the picture is supposed to look like.

Training your service dog is about more than just teaching them ‘Sit’ and ‘Stay’—they’re not a regular pet. They’re a service dog in training. Training to be a professional, so for them to be a pro, you need to train them like a pro.

They require advanced and specialzed techniques to be reliable in different environments and to stay calm around a world full of distractions.

That’s why we created the Academy…

We wanted to...

Share our step-by-step system for training a service dog.

We wanted to share our step-by-step system for training a service dog.

When we moved My Service Dog and Me online, owner-trainers asked us for a comprehensive roadmap. They needed a course that taught them not only what and how to train but also when to train each skill.

They wanted a complete course to ensure they didn’t miss anything throughout the entire process.

So, that’s exactly what we did. We created a framework that walks you through the entire process from beginning to end.

But we knew there was more to it...

Owner trainers also need to know what professional trainers know and have the skills professional trainers have.

We wanted to make sure we were answering questions you don't even know you should be asking, teach skills you don't even know you need, prevent problems you didn't even know to watch for.

We aimed to answer questions you don’t even know you should be asking, teach skills you don’t yet realize you need, and prevent problems you didn’t know to watch for.

And we wanted to cut through the overwhelm.

We created a place where like-minded owner-trainers can come together to learn essential skills, access comprehensive training plans, and be part of a supportive community.

And...

Because a well trained service dog is here to make your life easier

That means in every way—from increased independence to a chaos-free everyday experience.

Navigating crowded public spaces? .Your dog is calm and focused, ignoring distractions and glued to your side. Handling day-to-day tasks?  Want to explore new environments? All things your service dog needs to learn to do.

The good news? This reality doesn’t have to be a distant daydream; you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

In order to accomplish this

THERE ARE A COUPLE THINGS YOU NEED

(other than the dog )

  • A solid understanding of learning theory (and how to apply it like a pro)

Service dog training has traditionally been left to professionals because it requires extensive expertise to do it well. Unfortunately, we're seeing a rise in poorly trained dogs—barking, lunging, and pulling their owners—because many owner trainers lack the foundational knowledge to do it successfully.

  • Straightforward training plans and techniques.

You need to know what the professionals know and do what the professionals do. There's no need to reinvent the wheel—effective training plans and techniques already exist, and we teach them all inside the Academy so you and your service dog stay on track from start to finish.

Here's where it all comes together:

My Service Dog and Me's Online Academy

Whether you're just starting out or fine-tuning advanced skills, our core mission is simple: to empower owner-trainers like you with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to train a reliable, task-oriented service dog successfully.

We understand the unique challenges that come with this responsibility, so we've crafted a program tailored to your specific needs.
From foundational learning theory to advanced public access skills, we've thought of everything so you don't have to.

Hear from some of our Academy Members:

The Academy is a membership site designed to teach you both the science behind dog training AND give you step-by-step instructions on how to actually apply it to your service dog.

The academy is filled with videos, live trainings, and printable PDFs, all designed to help you train your own service dog.

Here's how the Academy works:

>> Structured Stages Our Academy is designed to guide you through four comprehensive stages, each building on the last. Think of it as a roadmap — no more guesswork, just straightforward, actionable steps that lead to success.

>> Content Libraries The puppy library and resource vault complement the Academy by providing resources on everything from crate training and play biting to living in a multi-dog household.

>> Access to Q&As and community Training a service dog can be lonely and overwhelming, but not here. Our community means you get access to monthly live Q&As and support from other owner trainers as you move through the curriculum.

We turn the complex world of service dog training into a series of manageable, bite-sized pieces

Here’s how:

Stage One

The Fundamentals

Service dog training is like building with Lego blocks. With the right core pieces, you can assemble a solid foundation that leads to success in task training, public access training, and beyond.

The Fundamentals focuses on building these essential Lego pieces, creating a strong foundation for you and your dog. It's about developing a dog-handler team that can work through distractions, learn new behaviors, and prove those behaviors in various environments.

Stage Highlights:

  • Clarify and solidify your training system with shaping, targeting, capturing and so much more
  • Learn polite walking, freedom walks, and the foundations that actually make up a solid heeling behavior
  • FOCUS behaviors and exercises so your dog can focus on you around distractions
  • A socialization masterclass with all my top tips for socialization at any age
Stage Two

Service Dog Skills

In this stage, you’ll combine the Lego blocks from the fundamentals to train various intermediate and advanced skills, concepts, and behaviors and systematically start public access training.

Stage Highlights:

  • Lessons on everything from advanced obedience to husbandry training, to heeling and so much more.
  • Public access prep like training in pet friendly places and learning to ignore high-level distractions like other people, other dogs, and more.
  • Advanced Support: Access to advanced-level Q&As, master classes, challenges, and more.
  • The Task Training Library:  Access to an ever-growing library of task training resources.
Stage Three

Advanced Service Dog Skills

This stage covers advanced training, including task training, public access behaviors, and other advanced service dog skills, preparing you to tackle a public access test.

Stage Highlights:

  • Train public access in a systematic way that prevents problems and creates lasting success
  • Teach any public access behaviors your dog needs to navigate public spaces
  • Learn how to handle the public and teach your dog to do the same
Stage Four

Public Access Tests

Stage four focuses on one thing: passing a public access test*. We’ll guide you through each test component to ensure you and your dog are ready to work as a team.

*Please not we do not offer public access testing or certification. However, this module prepares you to take a standard public access test.

Stage Highlights:

  • Individual lessons on each component of the public access test

Frequently Asked Questions

What people asked before signing up for The Academy

The Academy is an online, $42 per month membership site. You'll have access to it for as long as you're a member.

You'll receive one new level every week.

Note: The task training library opens up to you in stage two.

You'll have access to the first level and the community immediately upon joining.

Because this is a self-study program that does not require an application process, we do not offer certification at this time.  Instead, the Academy is designed to be an educational program providing students with dog training skills, training plans, and knowledge to train their dogs to a high level.

*At this time, certification is not required in the United States. Click here to learn more about the ADA and how it governs the use of service dogs.

One level in the Academy will be released to you every week. This means you have access to the entire academy in about six months. But every dog-handler team is different and service dogs take two years to fully train.

While there are lots of downloadable resources inside the academy (that you’ll be able to download and keep forever), the videos and lessons are not downloadable. This means you only have access to them while you are a member.

Once you cancel, you’ll lose access to these lessons.

If you and/or your dog are more advanced, you’ll still need to start with the Fundamentals Stage. This is for a few reasons.

  • First, foundation training is always the most important type of training to revisit and return to, even if you’re a professional dog trainer and this is your fifth service dog.

  • Second, as you probably know, there is a lot of variation in how different trainers teach different skills, even among positive reinforcement trainers. But, the thing about our programs is that they are designed to be used as a system, each lesson building off the last the entire way through.  The way we teach each behavior or skill has been chosen specifically to teach not just that behavior but to teach a variety of specific skills simultaneously.

For example, we know that one way to teach eye contact is with a lure. We purposely teach eye contact without a lure so that we are setting you, and your dog, up for success in upcoming lessons. If you haven't taught eye contact the way we teach it, you'll be more likely to struggle in upcoming lessons.

In order for us to teach effectively using this format, we need to know that everyone has learned the same set of foundation skills, behaviors, and physical mechanics.

  • Third, if you’re struggling in any area of your dog’s training, there’s a very high chance that it is due to a hole in your dog’s foundation. Patch the hole and you're on the way to solving the problem.
  • Fourth, it is simply unethical for us to provide service dog training to students and dogs without any kind of prerequisite. The Fundamentals stage and checkpoint allows us to make sure you and your dog are ready for service dog training (just as we would if we were working with you in person).

The short answer is yes, the course is suitable for dogs of all ages and training levels. The Fundamentals Stage is EXACTLY how we start our own dogs and puppies, regardless of their age.

However, this is why we also include the puppy training library as a bonus. It adds the puppy-specific resources you need.

In order to take advantage of this course, you'll need to be comfortable learning through written text and video examples, comfortable posting videos to our course community, and fluent enough with your computer (or mobile devices) to use the online course and community.

  • A computer or mobile device with an up-to-date operating system. We cannot guarantee access to the content from older devices or operating system.
  • A stable internet or cellular connection is required to access the online content. We do not have an option to work offline or download the course material. - A way to print the printable resources.
  • A camera or smartphone for video submission for coaching feedback inside the community. It is also useful to have a tripod or stand to film training sessions.
  • You will need to have basic technology skills and basic knowledge of troubleshooting problems with your equipment.
  • You will need to understand how to upload, download, edit your videos, and post in a community platform.

While we have training videos specific to our platforms, our team is not able to offer in depth individual technical support, so it will be up to each student to ensure they have the skills and equipment necessary for online training.

Yes, however, as a professional trainer, you already know there are as many ways to train a sit as there are trainers to teach it. The thing about our programs is that they are designed to be used as a system, each lesson building off the last the entire way through.  The way we teach each behavior or skill has been chosen specifically to teach not just that behavior but to teach a variety of specific skills simultaneously.

For example, we know that one way to teach eye contact is with a lure. We purposely teach eye contact without a lure so that we are setting the student, and their dog, up for success in upcoming lessons. If a lure is suggested, and used, the student will be more likely to struggle in upcoming lessons.

For this reason, we ask that professional trainers who join refrain from offering alternative ways to teach things, leaving this up to the coaches (who are familiar with the entire curriculum). This way students who are new to training are not accidentally overwhelmed with a variety of options.

Who is the Academy for?

  1. The owner-trainer who’s just getting started and wants to do it right
  2. The owner-trainer struggling with something in their dogs training
  3. The owner-trainer who is sick of all the conflicting advice on social media and wants coaches they can trust
  4. The owner-trainer who is a self starter and learns well in an online format
  5. The Owner-trainer who wants a program to follow and the support to help customize things as needed
  6. The owner-trainer who is aware that service dog training is a marathon and not a sprint. You can see results quickly, but training a solid service dog takes time.

If this sounds like you, we can't wait to see you on the inside!
